What is Free Space Path Loss?

Free Space Path Loss (FSPL) is the reduction in radio signal strength that occurs as an electromagnetic wave propagates through free space. Even when there are no obstacles, reflections, buildings, or terrain blocking the signal, the radio wave spreads over an increasingly larger area as the distance from the transmitter increases. This spreading reduces the amount of signal energy received by the antenna.

The amount of free space path loss depends on only two factors:

  • Operating frequency

  • Distance between the transmitter and receiver

Free Space Path Loss Formula

FSPL(dB) = 32.44 + 20 log10(Frequency MHz)  + 20 log10(Distance km)
FSPL(dB) = 36.56 + 20 log10(Frequency MHz)  + 20 log10(Distance miles)

Example Calculation

Frequency: 450 MHz

Distance: 10 miles

FSPL = 36.56 + 20 * log10 * (450) + 20 * log10 * (10) ≈ 109.6 dB
