Critical Cable length Calculator

This tool calculates exact physical cut lengths for RF coaxial cables—including half-wave (λ/2) and quarter-wave (λ/4) critical electrical lengths—to eliminate phase cancellation and impedance mismatches at radio sites. By factoring in operating frequency and S11 VNA phase measurements, this calculator ensures phasing harnesses, duplexer interconnects, and branch cables are cut precisely to prevent power reflection and maximize system efficiency.

How to Use It

  1. Enter up to 8 Operating Frequencies (in MHz).

  2. Enter Velocity Factor (VF):

  3. Enter phase shift in degrees (S11 VNA measurement).

  4. Use the data for critical cable interconnect length.

Engineering Notes on Velocity Factor, Phase Shift, and Transmission Lines

When designing RF phasing harnesses, duplexer cabling, and low-band branch interconnections, treating a coaxial cable as a simple wire leads to severe impedance mismatches. At high frequencies, signals travel through coaxial transmission lines as electromagnetic waves. The speed at which this wave propagates is called phase velocity, and it depends entirely on the physical characteristics of the cable's internal dielectric material.

Understanding the Velocity Factor (VF)

The Velocity Factor (VF) is the ratio of the signal's speed inside the cable to the speed of light in a vacuum. Because dielectric materials like solid polyethylene (PE), foam PTFE, or air-spaced structures slow down the wave, the physical length of a cable required to achieve a specific electrical length is always shorter than it would be in free space.

Typical velocity factor baselines include:

  • Solid Polyethylene (PE): ~0.66 VF

  • Foam Polyethylene (FPE) / Foam PTFE: ~0.80 to 0.88 VF

  • Air-spaced / Semi-rigid Coax: ~0.90 to 0.95 VF

Failing to multiply the electrical wavelength by the cable's specific velocity factor results in physically miscut cables, triggering massive signal attenuation and high voltage standing wave ratios (VSWR).

Preventing Phase Cancellation via Precision Cuts

At critical branch interconnections—such as multi-coupling networks or antenna arrays—cables cut to unexpected quarter-wave (λ/4) or half-wave (λ/2) electrical lengths can act as unintentional impedance transformers or outright short circuits.

Using S11 Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) measurements allows engineers to capture real-world phase shifts in degrees. This calculator processes those active phase parameters alongside your target frequencies to provide the exact physical dimension requirements for your assemblies, successfully eliminating destructive phase cancellation and preserving peak system efficiency.
